In the 2017–18 fishing year, there were 301 observed captures of all petrels and other birds in trawl fisheries. Observed captures were of white-chinned petrel (218), sooty shearwater (55), grey petrel (6), flesh-footed shearwater (4), Westland petrel (3), spotted shag (2), fairy prion (2), common diving petrel (2), Buller's shearwater (2), white-headed petrel (1), southern black-backed gull (1), grey-backed storm petrel (1), gadfly petrels (1), black-bellied storm petrel (1), Snares Cape petrel (1), and New Zealand white-faced storm petrel (1). It was estimated by a statistical model that there were a total of 748 (95% c.i.: 639–887) captures in trawl fisheries.
